Moving Your Load

Caster wheels make moving things easier. If you have a project that involves these wheels, you may be tempted to buy whatever caster wheels you can find. However, this would be a big mistake. When choosing casters for your project, you need to do some research to find the right ones. One of the most important things to look into is how much weight the casters need to handle. Choosing the right caster makes all the difference in the way the weight is handled.

How to Measure for Load

Determining how much weight your casters can handle, you will need to look at the load capacity given in the product description. This measurement is for a single caster. You can multiply this measurement by the number of casters you will be using in your project. This will then give you the amount of weight the casters can handle.

Caster Wheel Size

If you are building a cart, for example, and need four casters, you might begin your search with a medium load capacity wheel. When looking at 4 inch caster wheels, you may see a weight capacity of 300 pounds. To calculate the load capacity, multiply 300 by 4. This means the casters can hold up to 1200 pounds. The cart and its load should not exceed this weight. If it does, you may need to go up a size in caster wheels. The larger the wheel size, the more load it will carry and the easier it will be to move.

Number of Caster Wheels Needed

Another option for increasing the load capacity is to change how you plan to configure the casters on the project. If you can add another caster, you increase your load capacity without needing to buy larger casters, which can be a money saver.

Caster Wheel Material

Make sure you also determine what kind of material the caster is made of. The material influences not only how much weight the caster can hold, but also how it will perform on floors. If the casters will be on a wood floor or tile, rubber or plastic casters will be fine. If the casters will be used on floors that have oil or grease on them, iron or steel ones will be needed.

When choosing which caster wheel to buy, you need to find the right one to handle the weight of your project. With a little bit of research, you are sure to find the best caster to make your project move.
