This post will be old news for the geeks out there, but I write it for those iPhone virgins who might be drawn to the iPhone now that a newer and more featured one targeted to non-owners is hitting the market. When they se that big pretty glass screen, the first thing they’re going to worry about is protecting it.
iPhone’s, the original onces, are pretty tough little devices. Demonstrations when they first hit the market showed that shaking them in a bag full of keys, scratching them with a key intentionally, and even dropping on concrete would not mar the glass screen.
With that in mind, on my first iPhone, I didn’t purchase a screen protector, why would I need one? I was wrong, despite keeping nothing in my right pocket but the iPhone, it’s plastic headphones and a cloth to clean it with, within three weeks my beautiful new toy had a little scratch in the upper quarter of the glass screen. I don’t now how it happened. I had never dropped it, abused it, or loaned it out. The offending scratch was barely noticeable unless I was in the sunlight with the screen turned off.
When the backlit screen was on, you could not see the scratch, but I was now jaded and needed a screen protector. I opted for the Power Support Crystal Film available in the Apple Store near my home. Easy to install, looks invisible, works great as far as I can tell. No new scratches on either phone I have, and one package contains two protectors, effectively making them half the price of other shields.
Over the last year I’ve managed to drop my iPhone(s) on more than one occasion. No scratches on the glass, no dents on the body, but some light suffing on the aluminum back. Still, after all the hype over the Zagg Invisibe Shield, I checked them out as I think about purchasing a new iPhone and how to protect its screen.
Installation of the Apple iPhone Full Body invisibleSHIELD is easy, but does take a little time to get it just right. To apply the film you need to clean your 3g iphone case well since any dirt or fingerprints under the film will be there until you remove the film from the device. To apply you peel a section of film from the paper backing, spray it with a special liquid solution and apply it to the iPhone. Once you apply the sticker you smooth it out with a squeegee that is included with the kit to remove air bubbles and excess liquid from under the film.
After applying the film it takes about five minutes for it to stick to the point where it won’t slide around when touched. The front piece of film is an easy install; the rear section gets a bit tricky. The rear piece of film covers the back of the iPhone and has flaps what wrap around the side of the case and the corners as well. For installation of this piece you have to apply the film to the flat portion of the iPhone and wait for it to dry then wrap the side flaps around. The potentially difficult and time consuming portion of the install is when you do the corners.
The film tends to want to not stick well so you have to hold it in place until it adheres to the iPhone. This took about one minute for each corner. Once the film stuck to the phone you just set the phone aside until it dries over night.
